More of you in every occasion

All of us know that we are individuals, and that within a group we are considered one. Expand that out a bit more to nations and people will say that you are Australian, American, English, Polish, you get the idea. A nation is one. So within all these communities how do we find ourselves and the place that we fit in. If you think of self, I imagine that you get a picture of something you did, a place you went on holiday or that has a lasting memory. All this is awesome, but if we only define ourselves by the past, chances are we will continue to recreate events good and bad, that keep us living life in a loop.

So how do we grow to be more of ourselves? By nature we all want to grow, to strive for something better, but is that more or the same? Lets take a look at an example; Imagine, if you will, a man going into work as a tele-sales service person, the role is to contact complete strangers and build re-pore with trust, authenticity so that those contacted will be willing to give, buy or sign a petition. We all know them, you may have even got a call from one of them today. Lets take our friend here (lets imagine his name is Bob).cartoon-car-crash     Bob turns up to work on a Monday ready for work, his mind focused on the events of the past weekend, what he plans to do with the boys on a Monday night, then he picks up the phone, with limited success, most people rejecting the product and in some way Bob. Tuesday comes and goes, same sort of day going through the motions, Friday comes, Bob has an encounter that changes everything. A car accident that destroys his car, he walks away not a scratch on him, miracle!

With this new lease on life Bob decides to change a few things, learn how to achieve more out of life and be more. Now he still needs his job right now, Bob adjusts his attitude slightly. Monday comes thoughts still somewhat on the events of the weekend, but Bob now with a high appreciation of how fragile life is he starts to believe in himself a bit more, his demeanor is more positive, a new found belief in the product has him excited and engaged to help people. Today Bob finds more success than he has before, inspired and ready to take on the world, Bob finds that a positive and passionate outlook has changed his success.

What changed? Is it just by attitude, that all the external factors in Bob’s life made him more successful. Maybe, can I suggest, with Bobs new perspective he has a desire to be more and do more with the fragile life that is his. How does this relate to you? You may not be like Bob, you’ve probably got that positive attitude, the hardworking mentality. I want to suggest to you that Bob became vulnerable, open and aware that his capacity wasn’t at 100%. We all know what we are capable of, some are scared, and some don’t know how to unlock their success. The choice Bob made was internal, it was his burning desire to have a life of significance, to use the time present-ed to him and start going after his dreams. You have the capacity to change your world and many of those around you, it only takes one decision and the will to go after it with all your might.

I believe YOU can be all you ever dreamed, start today!

The first step is…

Have you ever heard the expression that the longest journey starts with a single step? Or that the first step is always the hardest? What about the first step being the most exciting?

All these statements are true in their own right, and we all knowdisneycheshirecat that the first step is, well the first step. But, what happens when you don’t know you’ve started a journey, or that the step you took is leading you down a path you don’t want to go. My Dad always referred to the story of Alice in Wonderland when talking about this topic, the Cheshire cat. If you don’t know where you’re going it doesn’t matter which path you take. So what’s at the end of your path?

This then becomes the question, is the first step as important as the end destination? I could list a bunch of different analogies, if a plane is off course by 1 degree it will miss the destination by miles if not hundreds of miles, but instead I want to focus more on the benefits of the walk based on where we end up. Lets imagine that your destination is to have a lasting and committed marriage. Now at the start we all make a vow, in sickness and in health, till death do us part. So why are so many not making it to their destination? I want to suggest that we all from time to time lose sight of the destination, and take “first steps” onto wrong paths. “First steps” to love someone forever start in simple disciplines, telling them that you love them; telling them that you are proud of them; telling them that you will be there no matter what. I think that’s good advice. There is another side to the coin as well, if you berate, belittle or ridicule your spouse/friend/team mate/associate they may not (probably won’t) enjoy your company and in the end, leave. Now you are at the end of the relationship, which wasn’t your desired result.

I say all this to make the point that, your “first step” is not as important as the journey itself. The simple disciplines that you adopt are what will keep you focused on the path to your desired destination. Lets take our thought about marriage being till the end of our lives. Now before you all tell me how I couldn’t understand your situation or circumstances, I want to share a statement I heard from a couple who had been married for almost 80 years, when asked how they made it so long? “when we were growing up, if something broke we had to fix it”. What if, we all looked for a way to forgive, forget and fix what was broken. I think that kind of attitude would vastly change the way we see almost everything. Imagine that we fixed problems, instead of avoiding them. Confronted them in a way that didn’t accuse or put down, but found common ground to resolve and heal hurts.

In closing I want to ask you to think about your desired destination, whether its a focus on relationships, career/business achievements or getting better at golf. We all have the same amount of time each day, we all have the option to choose what we say and do. Take a  moment now and think on where you are heading, does your speech take you to that destination; will the activities you have planned help move you towards your goal. Every choice you make has an impact on the path you walk. Make today count, tell someone that you are proud of them. It might just change everything!

Look out for next weeks post, how to be more of yourself in your everyday.

A word of encouragement

Are you aware how unique you are? Of the millions of sperm that made it to the egg, your the one who succeeded. Of all the places you could have been born, you are strategically placed here for a reason. Of all the experiences you have had, your the only one who could have lived through them in the way you choose. I say this briefly in the hope of letting you know how unique you are.

The truth is, your potential and capability is still out there, it hasn’t been reached.  I know this because tomorrow you will get up and be challenged and grow;  you’ll do things a little bit better; and you’ll have a new perspective that will give you more and take you further than yesterday. This craving to be better and do greater things is inherent in all of us. The question is what do I want to achieve with the days I have before me. Dream big, then just a little bit bigger. It takes the same amount of energy to dream small as it does to dream big so, dream BIG! I believe anyone (especially you, yeah you!) can charge into tomorrow with the belief that it will be better and be what you want.

Ok, I hear you; ‘Ian you don’t know my situation, my finances, my whatever it is….’ and you know what, you’re right. I don’t know. So, let me tell you what I know. Today you woke up, rubbed the sleep out of your eyes and plunged into today. Maybe you went to work; maybe you watched youtube all morning; maybe you signed a $1million deal for your business. Whatever it was,  today you are right where you’re suppose to be. The question now is: where will you be tomorrow, the week after that, the month after that? I want to encourage you to take 2 minutes today (maybe now) to write down something you want that you don’t yet possess. Did you do it? How will you get it? Is it a stretch? Your dreams are worth striving for, fighting for, persisting for. I believe in you, your vision can change your world.

If you woke up today, read this and got inspired even for one second, let me keep encouraging you. I’m looking for World Changers. Whether it’s your world or the whole world, each of us makes up all the parts and when one rises, someone else will see and rise as well. The small steps you take will inspire, challenge and keep you fighting for you dreams. Always dream, looking forward to the future you want to live in. Your dreams are worth fighting for.
